Frequently asked questions

  • How are your conservatory roofs so reasonably priced?

Our conservatory roofs are so reasonably priced because we manufacture the conservatory roof here at our fabrication facility in Preston, Lancashire. Other conservatory roof suppliers "buy in" their conservatories at a premium and add their markup. Because we are a conservatory roof fabricator this means that there is no middle man and the prices are what you see is what you get.

  • How does your conservatory roof differ from other roofs?

Our conservatory roof is much different to the rest. With other roof systems you have to play the "align two little holes with two little bolts game". With our roof system you don't. There is only one bolt which is located straight into the eaves beam and ridge which saves time. Our customers have told us that after using other roofs on the market ours is the easiest and fastest out there. It's not only the speed of installation either. The quality of the aluminum and upvc cappings also gives us an advantage.

  • Can i use glass with your conservatory roofs?

Yes. Glass can be used with our conservatory roof. If glass is to be used we would definitely recommend the 25mm system. Glass at 4mm thick with a 16mm spacer bar between the two panes of glass gives a thickness of 24mm. 24mm glazing materials can be used on our 25mm system. Because most of our customers are double glazing companies we supply the roof unglazed, but we can also supply Pilkington activ blue which is a self cleaning glass.

  • Do you supply windows, doors and conservatories?

As we are a conservatory roof manufacturer we only fabricate the conservatory roof but as we supply many double glazing fabricators and trade outlets we can put you in touch with the right people in your area. Please call us or email for more information.

  • Have you your own installation team?

As mentioned earlier we only manufacturer the conservatory roof and don't install. If you require a full installation of your conservatory we can pass on your details or give you contact numbers of qualified people and companies that install conservatories. Please note we only give details of qualified FENSA registered installation teams.

  • What is a portal frame?

Portal frame conservatory roofs are large scale constructions which are generally designed to fit over and onto supermarkets, swimming pool enclosures, hotels and restaurants, just to name a few. These constructions are usually large scale with huge spans. The roof 'sits' on an aluminium box sectioned frame for support. This box section is either steel or aluminium and is powder coated to your required colour. We at Grand Design Conservatory Systems can design and manufacturer such huge scale undertakings and can put you in touch with installation teams across Britain if the project seems to big.

  • How much is your delivery charge?

Our delivery charge is free to factory or site address within the North west region. Within the north west all our roofs are delivered in flat pack form using our own delivery vehicles. If you live or have factory premises outside this area a delivery charge may be applicable. Please give us a call to find out how much delivery will be in your area.

  • Are your products guaranteed?

Yes. All our products are guaranteed for 10 years and have a life expectance of around 25 years. Other systems have the same life expectancy, but watch this space. Other conservatory roof companies still insist on using plastic top cappings on their mahogany, rosewood and light oak products. These can be prone to warping. All our external mahogany, cherrywood and light oak cappings are made from aluminium with a foiled finish. Eliminating the chance of warping and distorting.

  • What thickness of polycarbonate do you use on your roof?

We use either 25mm or 35mm polycarbonate on our conservatory roofs. Although 25mm thick polycarbonate sheeting is still the industry standard in the UK, more and more conservatories are moving on to the 35mm polycarbonate.

  • Where do you deliver to?

Where are you based? We deliver free of charge using our our deliver vehicles to the following areas:- Preston, Blackpool, Morecambe, Lancaster, Chorley, Bury, Bolton, Burnley, Manchester, Liverpool, Southport just to name a few. Mainly North West England, Lancashire area, Cumbria and Cheshire. If you are outside these areas we will charge a small delivery fee. We have customers in places like Kent so if you are unsure please call us or email giving us your location. We will be happy to assist.

  • Will i need planning permission?

This is probably a question you would have to ask your installer. Most conservatories don't need planning permission but it is always a good idea to check with your local planning department first. It differs from place to place depending on which town of city you live in. Most of our conservatory companies we supply our roofs to offer this service and will undertake all the relevant steps for you.

  • I've heard that your roof system is easy to install. Is this true?

Yes its true. Most of our customers have used other roof systems in the past. As we use the global conservatory system we are finding that when people use it for the first time they cannot believe how quickly they can install it. This makes the installation team happy, the homeowner happy and the boss of the conservatory company very happy! Not only is the roof easier to install but our prices are very competitive too.

  • What colours of polycarbonate do you use?

We use the following colours:- Bronze, Clear, Opal, Bronze/Opal, Heatguard ( also known as heatshield or silver/opal), Blue Opal, Green Opal and Yellow Opal. The most common polycarbonate colour we use is the Opal polycarbonate.

  • What is your turnaround on conservatory roofs?

We usually operate on a five day turnaround for all our roofs. We manufacturer modular and complex bespoke roofs and all our roofs are pre-fabricated or built on the shop floor prior to delivery. We do this to ensure that all the roof components have been cut and are correct for the installer. There is nothing worse that starting a roof and finding that you have something missing. This delay can sometimes be quite costly and can hold up any electricians or plasterers that might be waiting for the conservatory roof to be completed. If you require a roof to be made in a hurry, depending on the complexity of the roof, we can sometimes manufacture a roof and get it to you the next working day. For more information please call us.

  • What are tie bars?

Tie bars are an installers nightmare! Seriously, tie bars are long thin lengths of steel with a plastic sleeve which give the roof structure support. You will usually find tie bars on quite large conservatories but in some cases on small ones too. Each tie bar rod is fastened into a roof spar across the width of a conservatory. Where these rods meet there will be a rod going vertically to the ridge of the roof. Where all three of these rods meet there will be decorative "tie bar rose" which hides the unsightly rods. Homeowners and installers don't like tie bars. They can be unsightly and can get quite time consuming for the installer.

Our conservatory roof system is different. Our roof has been designed to save time. Our bolting system ties the glazing bars of the conservatory with a grub screw through 13mm bolt.  When tightened this grub screw locks into the glazing bar, supporting extra load. The global roof removes the requirement for many three way tie bars, and nearly all five way tie bars.

  • What styles of conservatory do you manufacturer?

We manufacture anything from small Lean to roofs, Porches, Victorian, Edwardian, Gable, P shape, T shape, Gazebos, Multi faceted, Lantern, Hipped lean to, Double hipped edwardian roofs to large commercial Glass atriums, Restaurant extentions, Smoking lean to's for pubs, Hot tub enclosures and swimming pool enclosures with portal frames. We can usually come up with a design even if you don't think its possible to! We can usually wrap a box gutter around anything.

  • We have a flat roof extention and want light to come in. What can we do?

More and more people are wanting light in their homes and with a flat roof extention this is still possible. Taking off the existing flat roof and installing a new low pitch lean to can be done using our Global 600 range which is designed to go down to 2.5 degrees or a square or rectangled hole can be made into the roof and a lantern or roof light can be installed to sit over the hole to let light in. Lantern of roof lights are becoming more popular. This is why we offer the cheapest priced conservatory roof lights on the market.

  • Can you put us in touch with a good conservatory fitter?

Yes. As we supply conservatory roofs to lots of installers and double glazing companies across the North West we can put you in touch with the right people in your area. Please phone us for more information.

  • I would like to build my own conservatory. Will you supply me?

Yes. All we need from you are the sizes and style of the conservatory and we will design the conservatory roof for you. We can also provide you free CAD drawings. All our conservatory roofs come with an easy to follow installation booklet.

  • We fabricate Duraflex upvc windows. Does the colour match?

Most of the upvc windows in the UK are similar in colour. There are some out there which have different colour properties to the normal white colour. That is why we also do Global Blue. Global Blue has been devised to match pvcu frames which are a different white.

  • Apart from white what other colours can we have?

The colours we have on offer are:- White, Global Blue, Cherrywood (rosewood), Light Oak and Mahogany.
